Two Minute DIY Essential Oil Mouth Wash

There are a lot of options for mouth wash on the market. However, I'm not crazy about the synthetic ingredients of many of them. And some natural ones are rather pricey. So I decided to create my own more economical version. Using just a few natural ingredients plus essential oils I have a refreshing mouthwash that is cleansing and I enjoy the taste. Since I don't add a preservative I do have to make this in small batches, use very clean bottles and equipment, and use it within a few weeks. You can customize the mouth wash by switching up the essential oils and you could even add a touch of stevia if you want a bit of sweetness. The oils and baking soda will help fight germs, freshen breath, and promote healthy gums. I've also included a recipe that contains alcohol which will help it keep longer.

Here's the simple version I make in the video:

4-8 oz very clean bottle (glass or PET plastic)

1/2 cup distilled or boiled and cooled water

1 teaspoon baking soda (sodium bicarbonate -- I use aluminum free)

Essential oils I used

5 drops peppermint

3 drops Thieves oil immune blend (OnGuard® from doTERRA or similar)

1 drop lemon

Combine all ingredients and shake gently to mix. Best to store in a cool, dark location. Use the swish and spit method to clean your mouth after brushing and flossing (don't swallow it).

If you prefer to add alcohol to your mouth wash you can try this version:

1/2 cup vodka or brandy

1 tsp vegetable glycerine

5 drops lemon essential oil

5 drops peppermint essential oil

2 drops lavender essential oil

2 drops tea tree essential oil

2 drops thyme essential oil

Combine ingredients in a 5 oz or larger bottle. Seal and shake thoroughly. Set aside in a cool dark place for a week. Use cheesecloth or coffee filter to strain into a clean bottle or jar. Store in a cool, dark location. To use combine 1/4 cup warm water with 1 teaspoon of mouth wash. Mix well and swish around in mouth several times. Spit out, do not swallow. This recipe was adapted from "The Complete Aromatherapy & Essential Oils Handbook for Everyday Wellness" by Purchon and Cantele.

Happy swishing!
