Handcrafted Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Mother's Day is May 10th. If you are looking for a special way to celebrate the awesome mom in your life why not create a handcrafted gift from the heart? Maybe your mom loves to garden? Does she adore coffee? Could her tootsies use a little TLC? Does she love a good bath? Here a few easy to make DIY ideas to pamper mom and let her know she's special. These recipes are designed to be simple and easy to make with hopefully readily available ingredients.

But First Coffee!

If your mom is a fan of coffee she'll love this luscious scrub that features coffee, sugar, and peppermint. It's uplifting and leaves the skin feeling oh so soft and it's simple to make. This scrub can leave your tub or shower a bit slippery so be careful after using.

What you'll need:

4 oz PET plastic jar or cute container with a lid (glass is not a great choice for the tub or shower especially when paired with an oily scrub but if it's heavy duty it may be ok)

* 1-1.5 oz white sugar

* 1-1.5 oz ground coffee

* 1 oz Grapeseed, avocado, fractionated coconut oil, or jojoba oil are good choices

* 10 - 20 drops of peppermint (Mentha x piperita) essential oil or if preferred you can use lavender or other skin safe essential oil (caution peppermint is cooling so don't overdo it!)

* 1-2 tsp castile soap or shower gel (helps make the scrub feel less oily)

* clean metal spoon or mixing utensile

Add equal amounts of sugar and ground coffee to your jar leaving space for the oils. Mix gently to combine. Top off with carrier oil and add in essential oils. Mix gently but thoroughly.

If you like a very oily more liquidy scrub add less sugar/coffee mixture and more oil. If like me you like a thicker scrub add more of the sugar/coffee mixture and less carrier oil. Keep the amount of essential oils the same. Use 10 drops essential oil for lighter scent and less cooling power and 20 drops for a heavier scent and more cooling power.

Create a label and decorate as desired.

To use: Scoop out the desired amount and massage on the body -- arms, legs, torso, elbows, feet. This is NOT recommended for the face.

Calling all Green Thumbs... Gardener's Salt Scrub

Does your mom enjoy gardening? This scrub helps scrub away dirt without drying out your hands and it smells lovely. You can even pair this scrub with seeds or a plant, gardening tools, or other garden themed gifts. And even if your mom isn't an avid gardener she'll still enjoy the hand softening benefits of this scrub and taking time for a mini hand massage.

What you'll need:

4 oz PET plastic jar, glass jar, or other essential oil safe jar

1 1/2 oz of fine salt (pink Himalayan, sea salt, or table salt will work)

1 oz jojoba oil

1 oz coconut oil

30 drops lavender (Lavendula angustafolia) essential oil

10 drops orange (Citrus sinensis) essential oil

1 tsp of castille soap (optional) to give a less oily feel

Combine salt, carrier oil, and essential oils in the jar (or alternatively use a clean ceramic or stainless steel bowl). Mix well to combine.

Add a label and decorative touches as desired.

To use: Scoop out a small amount and scrub on the backs of hands, between fingers, and all over the hands. Rinse salt and either let the oils moisturize your hands or wash with soap and water. Note: if salt settles just roll the capped jar gently to mix. Since this recipe does not contain a preservative use with a few weeks.

Dreamy Foot Soak for Tired Feet:

If your mom is on her feet a lot and those tootsies need some TLC she'll love this refreshing and soothing foot soak. You could also use some of the salts as a scrub after you soak.

What you'll need:

One 8 oz jar

8 oz of medium grained salt (sea salt, pink Himalayan salt, or other medium grained salt)

1 - 2 oz jojoba oil

15 - 20 drops peppermint (Mentha x piperita) essential oil

15 - 20 drops lavender (Lavendula angustafolia) essential oil

15- 20 drops balsam copaiba (Copaifera officinalis) essential oil

Clean Mixing utensil such as a spoon and bowl (stainless steel or ceramic)

1-2 tsp castille soap if desired for a less oily feel

Combine the salt, jojoba oil, and essential oils in a bowl. Stir gently to combine. Spoon mixture into jar or suitable packaging.

Add a label and decorative touches.

To use: add 1/4 c to a warm foot bath and soak feet for 10 -15 minutes. If desired scoop out a small amount and use as a foot scrub. Careful when exiting tub as you feet and tub may be slippery. Note due to the peppermint this is NOT recommended for use in the tub.

Soothing Milk Bath Soak:

Is your mom a fan of baths? Why not package her favorite book or beverage along with this soothing milk bath soak and other bath treats. It will leave mom's skin feeling amazing and relax her mind and body.

What you'll need:

One 8 oz jar or suitable packaging

1/2 c of Epsom salt or medium grained salt (sea salt, pink Himalayan salt, or other medium grained salt)

1/2 c powered milk

1 - 2 tsp jojoba oil

35 drops lavender (Lavendula angustafolia) essential oil

5 drops frankincense (boswellia carterii) or balsam copaiba (Copaifera officinalis) essential oil

Combine the milk, salt, jojoba oil, essential oils, and castille soap if using in a bowl. Stir gently to combine. Spoon mixture into jar or suitable packaging.

Add a label and decorative touches.

To use: add 1/4 c or more to a warm bath and soak under running water and enjoy soaking for 15-20 minutes.
