Our situations are all different but for certain we are all adapting to new normals. In light of that I want to share an inhaler blend that offers a combination of essential oils that are both relaxing and help support focus.
Inhalers are like personal diffusers. They consist of a metal or plastic case and a cotton wick that holds the essential oils. They are portable and easy to use anywhere. You can carry them in your pocket, purse, have one by your computer, or bedside. They can be used over and over for weeks or months if capped after each use and they can be created for all sorts of therapeutic needs -- head ache, sleep support, nausea, focus, stress relief, allergy support, sinus support, etc.
This blend in particularly is good for use during the day if you need relaxation but also need to focus for work or school.
I chose Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) essential oil because research indicates it supports memory and focus. Rosemary has been shown to increase circulation and helps alleviate mental fatigue. Rosemary also stimulates the central nervous system. It is a good choice for use during work, school, or in situations where focus or mental alertness is required. As a bonus rosemary is analgesic and anti-inflammatory. It also offers respiratory support and is antimicrobial and is useful for boosting mood during times of stress. Rosemary if fresh and herbaceous. Its aroma will vary slight depending on chemotype. Camphor or cineole types are stronger smelling and more camphoraceous than verbenone type.
I used sweet Citrus sinensis or orange essential oil for its bright, uplifting qualities. Orange essential oil can stimulate the immune system, it appears to act as a tonic to strengthen the body, and smells amazing -- citrusy and orange of course. Additionally orange also offers analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties.
Citrus bergamia (bergamot) essential oil is bright and citrusy yet calming. It's what gives Earl Grey tea its special aroma. It is useful for emotional support, insomnia, and stressful feelings. It also offers analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and mood boosting properties. Adding bergamot to this inhaler can help one deal with emotions brought on by stressful times.
Cananga odorata (ylang-ylang) essential oil is a strong floral oil. It is sweet and sensual but deeply calming. Ylang-ylang has been shown to help lower heart rate and blood pressure. It is described as harmonizing and a tonic to the body. Some research suggests that it can actually increase alertness while producing a calm. It is best used in small amounts because it is quite strong.
These essential oils combine beautifully to create an aroma inhaler that is calming yet supports focus -- so you can relax and still get things done. It is beneficial to add in deep breathing exercises such as box breathing in addition to increase oxygen flow to the brain and body as well as modulate breathing and mood.
I Got This Inhaler Blend:
One aroma inhaler (preferably with organic cotton wick)
6 drops Citrus sinensis (orange) essential oil
5 drops Citrus bergamia (bergamot) essential oil
3 drops Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary)* essential oil
1-2 drops Cananga odorata (ylang-ylang) essential oil
You can drip oils onto the cotton wick or create the blend in a small oil safe dish, mix, and absorb the oils into the wick using tweezers. The wick is placed in the plastic or metal housing (avoid getting essential oils on the hands by using gloves or tweezers).
To use: Uncap the inhaler and placed near the nostrils. Inhale deeply.
