March is respiratory support month at ABT and Be Kekoa Apothecary. There are a variety of essential oils that can help open up airways and support respiratory wellness. This is great when one is facing anything from allergies to colds or even trying to support the respiratory system when engaging in sports or outdoor activities.
Peppermint and eucalyptus are a few favorites to open up airways but a lesser known essential oil that does a great job supporting healthy lung function is Tsuga canadensis or Hemlock essential oil.
When I mention hemlock to some they think of Socrates and the potentially poisonous plant Conium maculatum but the hemlock tree is unrelated to the flowering plant in the carrot family. The essential oil from the hemlock tree is safe and lovely.
Hemlock gets therapeutic properties from aromatic molecules such as isobornyl acetate, alpha-pinene, camphene, and piperitone among others.
These compounds offer antispasmodic, decongesting, mucolytic, and expectorant properties making hemlock useful for supporting healthy lung function, easing coughs, and helping the body clear excess mucus.
Hemlock essential oil is also said to support the immune system and support adrenal function. Like a walk through the woods the aroma of hemlock essential oil is uplifting, fresh, and piney.
A great way to use this essential oil is in an inhaler or diffuser.
In an inhaler try blending six drops of hemlock with six drops of lavender or spike lavender, and six drops of white pine. The combination of pine and lavender will support lung health and smell lovely.
An inhaler is great for on the go and useful for work, travel, and on the go.
Alternatively add a drop or two of each oil to a diffuser and enjoy.
