Poor Sleep? Give Essential Oils a Try.

Quality sleep is vital for good health but elusive for many. And there are a variety of reasons why we find it tough to get the sleep we need.

Stress and worry can make it hard to relax and get to sleep. Changes in hormones, technology overload, pain, lack of unwinding routine, underlying illness, or personal choices are some of the reason it can be tough to get the sleep we need.

While there is magic fix or one size fits all solution to sleep essential oils, especially when part of a good sleep routine can be very helpful.

There are many essential oils that can soothe, calm, and promote sleep. If pain or stress is the issue preventing sleep again essential oils can help soothe muscles, reduce feelings of stress or tension, and promote calming and sleep.

Often simply adding a relaxing essential oil or blend can support better sleep but many times a consult with a certified aromatherapist can be beneficial in determining which oils or approaches are best for each client and they can offer suggestions about a night-time routine and other changes that may help support sleep.

Three Wonderful Essential Oils and Recipes to Support Sleep:

Lavender my old friend:

Although very familiar lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) can be very beneficial at supporting the body and promoting sleep. Lavender can quiet an overactive mind, and soothe and calm the body. Lavender is a tonic to the body and can support it in many wonderful ways.

Try using it in an inhaler, diffuser, bath salt, or lotion. For a soothing night-time routine add 3-5 drops of lavender into a teaspoon of carrier oil and add to a warm bath. Soak for 20 minutes to relax and support better sleep.

Or combine lavender in this DIY inhaler recipe you can keep bedside and inhale when you turn in and if you awake during the night.

you'll need an inhaler with (preferably) organic cotton wick. (To see what an inhaler is visit here Or here)

4 drops lavender

4 drops rosewood

1-2 drops ylang-ylang

1 drop vetiver

4 drops green mandarin or orange

add oils directly to inhaler cotton wick or in a dish and allow cotton wick to soak up. For a video on how to create an inhaler visit here.

If you don't have all these essential oils simply making a lavender inhaler will help. Even adding a drop of lavender to a tissue and inhaling deeply will soothe and calm. Essential oils can work wonders especially coupled with breathing.

Sweet, soothing, and sophisticated ylang-ylang soothes the heart and can do a whole lot more.

Ylang-ylang essential oil is said to have an affinity for the heart is noted as having aromatic compounds with hypotensive qualities. It relaxes, soothes, and quiets. Like lavender it has tonic qualities which means it supports the body in the way that it needs.

Ylang-ylang is a strong floral essential oil. Smells lovely but can be overpowering in large doses and cause headaches. So a drop will do -- literally! Use in small amounts in a bath, a diffuser, an inhaler, bath salt, or lotion. Combine with other relaxing oils for a beautiful synergistic effect.

Lean, Green, Soothing Machine -- Green Mandarin:

I love green mandarin. It is not as well known as some of the other citrus essential oils but it packs a (yawn) soothing punch. And smells delightful.

Green mandarin is calming and soothes overthinking and can help the mind ease into a more peaceful state.

Combine 1-2 drops lavender, 1-2 drops of green mandarin, and 2-3 drops of bergamot in a diffuser for a wonderfully relaxing night-time blend.

Essential oils offer a wonderful way to support sleep, reduce feelings of tension and stress, and combat many emotional issues. And they can be used in so many ways and alongside many other efforts.
